Alpujarra and 4 Sierras Itinerary

There are five days of guided walks with an overnight stay in the Alpujarra in a small village, and there is a rest day on which you may make an optional visit to the wonderful city of Granada or take a self-guided walk from our base. We use a 4x4 as transport to trailheads.

  • Day 1.  Arrival at our base in Orgiva, capital of the western Alpujarra.
  • Day 2. An introductory walk in the Sierra de Contraviesa to the isolated village of Alcazar.  In the steep river valley there is the possibility of seeing wild ibex and sometimes black vultures have been spotted.
  • Day 3.  Drive to the small village of Juviles in the eastern Alpujarra and we set off up an old drover's track into the Sierra Nevada. Climbing higher we get wonderful views of the high peaks and surrounding ranges before descending to Las Berchules. Returning to Juviles by a different route up a rocky Moorish trail we collect the vehicle and drive to Yegen where we spend the night.
  • Day 4. Leaving the village we pass amazing spires and ravines caused by erosion of the sandstone cliffs. After a village refreshment stop we climb a Moorish trail up to our picnic spot by a wood of holm oaks, where we have a magnificent view of the valleys below. We then continue via paths through chestnut woods by rushing streams back to Yegen. Drive back to Orgiva.
  • Day 5.  A rest day.  You have the opportunity to visit Granada and the Alhambra or you can take maps and instructions for a self-guided walk above Orgiva.
  • Day 6. We drive south west to Guajar Alto and from the sub-tropical valley filled with exotic fruit trees we climb the Sierra de Los Guajares.  Passing mountain farms and stands of umbrella pines we get magnificent views of mountain ranges and receding valleys towards the sea.
  • Day 7. We return to Los Guajares to walk on the jagged Sierra de Chaparral.  We visit a ruined Moorish settlement before climbing a rocky track through pine woods and flowering shrubs high onto the ridge where you may get views of the Mediterranean and possibly Africa. Decending to Guajar Alto there are stunning views of the surrounding sierras and maybe snow on the towering Sierra Nevada.
  • Day 8. Departure day, sorry to see you go..................How to Book
